White continues with the Main Semeai, and will not give atari at here in this variation.

Black utilises White's tenuki to gain at the upper edge.

Just before, Black lost one move in the Main Semeai, so he is unable to connect his stone at the bottom with a move at , for a two-point effect on White's potential territory.
He has to choose a one-point forcing move like , instead.

The Main Semeai continues.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • White lost one point of territory at the upper edge.
  • White captured Black's single stone at the bottom, for a gain of two points.
  • Black destroyed one point of White territory in the top right corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • White lost one point of territory at the upper edge.
  • White did not capture an additional Black stone at the bottom, for a loss of two points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the upper right, for a gain of one point.

In total, White lost two points by not giving atari at the upper edge.

White + 1 => Black + 1
