Black plays from below, separating both single White stones, and securely capturing White's stone above.

White continues with the Main Semeai.

Black could also capture with in the upper right in sente; the final scores of the game will not be affected.

Black plays 1/1 reduction.

White will connect her single stone with in the Capture Variation.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black lost lost one stone for two points of White territory in the lower right.
  • Black reduced White's territory in the upper right by one point.

In total, Black lost one point by his initial move in the upper right.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • White did not capture one of Black's stones in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the upper right corner.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the centre.
  • White captured an additional stone of Black's large group, with territory, for a gain of two points

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1
