We will assume in this subvariation that Black does not want to capture the ko in the left centre with .

Connecting the ko with , instead, would be mistaken.

Black plays 3/4 reductions.

Please assume Black's second kikashi in the hanezeki (, ) played before.

White will connect at after her decision point.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White captured one Black stone in the left centre, so gaining one point.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the upper right corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White captured one Black stone in the left centre, so gaining one point.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the upper right corner, so gaining one point.

In total, Black lost two points.

Black + 1 => White + 1
