Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.4)

: ( 648eb)
White pre-empts Black's kikashi in the hanezeki.

Please note that this move - which emphasizes the Semeai Variation - is inconsistent with her earlier refutation of Dany's Sacrifice in the lower left - which emphasizes the Capture Variation.

:
Black reduces White's territory at the top any further.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai.

:
White has to connect the ko - sooner or later.

:
Black plays his gote atari in the hanezeki.

White would achieve the same final scores, if she prevented this move with her own kikashi , .

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Later, White will play her kikashi , in the lower left corner, so that Black must capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed an additional point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not destroy White's territory in the upper right corner, so losing one point.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed an additional point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the upper right corner, so losing one point.
  • White captured an additional Black stone above the hanezeki, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1
