White does not want to pre-empt Black's atari by playing her own kikashi , . The final result of the game will not be affected, but White will be unable to capture Black's large group in the upper right in the Semeai Variation.

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is three points.
  • Black gained two points in the upper right by capturing one White stone.
  • White lost one point of territory in the upper right.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is three points.
  • White gained two points at the right by capturing one additional Black stone.
  • White lost one point of territory in the upper right.
  • White lost one point of territory in the hanezeki.

In total, White gained three points.

Black + 2 => White + 1
