In total, gains and losses compensate for each other

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is three points.
  • White got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the left centre, so gaining one point.
  • White got one point of territory in the upper right corner.

In total, White lost one point.

Black + 2 => Black + 3
