Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.3) (.1)

: ( 648jr)
Black continues with the mutual occupation of opponent's liberties in the Main Semeai.

:
White uses her opportunity to throw-in in the left centre.

; :
Black plays his remaining kikashi on the lower side of the board.

:
White connects. Thereafter, Black is securely ahead by six liberties in the Main Semeai.

White will not choose Dany's Sacrifice here, because the final result of the game will become worse overall.
If she did, she would be able again to capture Black's large group in the upper right in the Semeai Variation, but her loss in the lower left would be decisive for the Capture Variation.
The final scores would become White + 2 / White + 2.

Black plays 3/6 reductions.

With 6/6 reductions, the final scores would be Jigo / White + 6.

After Black has played to occupy another White liberty at the left, the forcing sequence of , , , is White's privilege. Thereafter, she will play her kikashi , in the lower left corner, so that Black will have to capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • In the left centre, Black captured one White stone, but did not get any territory, so the net effect is zero.
  • White's cumulated gain in the lower left corner is one point.

In total, Black lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

At White's decision point, Black's large group in the upper right will have ten liberties, eight direct liberties (), and two approach-move liberties (), so White will be unable to capture it.

Black will win the game by a large margin.
