Please assume the rejection of Dany's Sacrifice and Black's second kikashi in the hanezeki (, ) played before.

White will force Black to capture at , and to connect below, before her decision point.
She will also play her kikashi , in the lower left corner, so that Black will have to capture at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black gained one point at the upper edge.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, but captured an additional White stone there, so the net effect is zero.
  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left corner is one point.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 1 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black gained one point at the upper edge.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, but captured an additional White stone there, so the net effect is zero.
  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left corner is one point.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
