Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.2)

: ( 648or)
White plays Dany's atekomi.

White's move would lose one tempo in the Main Semeai, in principle. However, it creates an approach-move liberty () for her left-hand group, so the total effect is zero.

; :
Black starts Dany's Ko.

He is able to do so, because White lost one tempo by her previous forcing move in the lower left corner. Contrary to earlier variations of this ko, Black is at eight Main Semeai Liberties now; this is one liberty over par.

Black will lose this ko here, too, so he might simplify the issue by retreating with with any of these two moves.

:
White recaptures the ko, after having used the capture of the nakade (including the Nakade Sequence) as a ko threat.

:
Black connects, erasing his shortage of liberties in this area.

:
White connects her single stone the upper edge, losing one tempo in the Main Semeai. Black is at two over par now.

Connecting the ko with would be too early.

Ko: ;

:
The ko fight continues.

:
Please note that Black's atari at White's two stones in the lower left is explicitly used as a ko threat.

:
White's connection costs two tempi in the Main Semeai.

; :
Please understand these two moves as replacement for White's kikashi , in the centre, which had been played too early by us, and which compensates for Black's just played ko threat in the lower left.

; ; ; ; :
These ko threats cost one tempo in the Main Semeai each. Eventually, Black is three over par.

Please note that is played in a neutral area.

:
Black continues with the Main Semeai here.

Joachim found that each side has one ko threat left (, ) before this move.
However, continuing the ko fight with using these two threats would not affect the final scores of the game.

:
White has to connect the ko.

Black plays 1/3 reductions.

Before the end of the game, Black will have to capture at .

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone at the top, so gaining one point.
  • White did not get any territory in the centre, so losing two points.
  • Black destroyed four points of White's territory in the upper right.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the upper left corner.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
