Please assume for this subvariation that the exchange of for had been played quite early in the course of Dany's Ko.

Please note that Black would have to take White's two stones off the board anyway, if White won the ko in the left centre - just because his upper string possesses only one internal liberty.
This means that Black won a decisive move here.

So late in the game - with all of Black's ko threats in the upper right played - connecting at , instead, will not affect the final scores of the game.

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not destroy one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost one point.

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White captured one Black stone less at the upper edge, so losing one point.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the lower left corner, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1
