White connects her single stone at the upper edge.

:
Black answers with the safety-first measure of KataGo's solid connection in the left centre.

:
White starts reducing Black's territory at the left side of the board (effective in the Capture Variation).

Simply continuing with the Main Semeai (i.e. occupying Black's liberties at the right only) would cost her one point overall (see below).

:
White continues with her territory-reducing moves at the left.

:
White reduces Black's territory in the right centre by one point.

:
White has run out of territory-reducing moves, and so continues with occupying Black's liberties at the right.

:
Now the time has come for Black's territory-reducing moves at the right side of the board.

Black plays 6/7 reductions.

Please note that Black does not have any further territory-reducing move (for the Capture Variation), so that he is unable to wholly compensate for White's territory-reducing moves at the left side of the board before.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture White's stone at the upper edge, so losing one point.
  • White got an additional two points of territory at the upper edge.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre, but did not capture a White stone there, so the net effect is zero.
  • White did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • White destroyed two points of Black's territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed four points of White's territory at the top.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture White's stone at the upper edge, so losing one point.
  • White got an additional two points of territory at the upper edge.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre, but did not capture a White stone there, so the net effect is zero.
  • White did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • Black captured an additional four White stones at the left, so gaining six points.
  • White captured an additional four Black stones at the top, so gaining four points.

In total, White lost one point.

Jigo => Black +1
