Black does not have any chance to win Dany's Ko, so he might consider simplifying the issue by connecting at , instead.

However, not fighting the ko will cost Black one point in the Semeai Variation, as has been shown in an earlier subvariation above ( 649ah).

Black has to connect his two stones.

:
White connects her single stone at the upper edge, taking profit outside the Main Semeai area.

:
White has to connect the ko - sooner or later.

:
The Main Semeai continues.

Black plays 2/3 reductions.

Before the end of the game, Black must capture at .

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture White's stone at the upper edge, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional two points of territory at the upper edge.
  • White did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the right centre.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black did not capture White's stone at the upper edge, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional two points of territory at the upper edge.
  • White did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the right centre, but lost two points of territory there, so the net effect is zero.

In total, White gained one point.

Jigo => White +1
