Capture Variation

:
In Fujisawa's Capture Variation, White continues the endgame in the top left corner. Here, we again follow the sequence Cheng Xiaoliu 6p used in 1988 [LIT. 3; page 355]. It ends with , we have added the moves , , and . Please also note that Cheng did not exchange for (as Fujisawa did) before beginning with the subsequent endgame.

Black wins by three points.

Cheng gives the score of this kind of Capture Variation as a three point win for Black, which means that Black's captured 71st stone is included in the score.

However, Cheng's result is one point better for Black than that given by Fujisawa Hideyuki 9p.

/// :
One potential explanation we found for Fujisawa Hideyuki 9p giving the score as only two points for Black is that he might have connected White's atari on the lower edge. The effects of and cancel each other out. Black gains two points by connecting . But he loses one point of territory, at 167, in the upper left corner, and White gains one point of territory () there. White's final atari at in the lower right gains her one point of territory (). In total, Black has lost one point, so the score becomes two points for Black.

/// :
A second option for White would be to give atari in the lower right, after Cheng's endgame sequence until . This also gains one point (), and has been found by Joachim in 2002 ( 779).
