The History of the Problem's Final Score

(1999 - 2011)

1999 - 2001 - The Journey Begins

Here, we present what has been given by Merlijn Kuin 6d as solution to problem 404 on "goproblems.com". This sequence was the basis for Joachim's studying Igo Hatsuyōron 120. We found later that the sequence was identical to the solution of Fujisawa Hideyuki, but with the "early" Hanezeki Exchange of Cheng inserted (as , ; 760).

Please note that - until 2009 - we could not be really sure about Joachim's assumption of a missing 71st Black stone ( 778). So, in this chapter, we initially calculate the number of captured Black stones without that additional White prisoner.

:
White captures the nakade for the second time.

:
White captures the nakade for the third time.

:
This is Black's last oki into White's eye on the left side. Now, we are just a few moves away from the very decisive point of the solution's sequence.

:
The main line (= Semeai Variation) on goproblems.com continues with a White move at , the result thereafter is given as a Black win by three points. However, another variation shown (= Capture Variation) that we use here would be one point better for White. This variations starts with White capturing Black's centre group with a move at .

:
Black recaptures. No further continuation of the move sequence is included in the goproblems.com's solution; there is the following commentary on the outcome of the game only. This commentary equals the statement Fujisawa Hideyuki had given for the final result of his Capture Variation ( 757).

Black will win the game by two points.
