2012 - Preventing White's Endgame

in the Classical Path

While thinking about the correct moment that White should start the endgame in the top left corner with the tsuke of Yamada Shinji at , Joachim Meinhardt got the idea that Black could probably defend his corner (with ) before the Crosscut Sequence in the top left centre is complete. This idea is valid only with the professional solution, where the guzumi () has not been played beforehand.

In response, White plays at , and ensures that her left side cannot be captured. Now, Black's only hope is to set up a ko (with the sequence to ), while securing one eye. Thereafter, he also has to reduce White's group at the top to only one eye (e.g. with , and ).
This ko is not trivial at all, making it necessary to have a separate chapter ( 1133) on its theoretical foundations. The further moves of this variation can be found earlier ( 225). Eventually, Black will not be successful.
