The Group on the Left Side

(Referenced by 445)

Black captures four White stones in the lower left corner with . It threatens a follow-up move at , to capture another four White stones. Black profits by at least 13 points. This might help to compensate for a loss in the upper left corner. Black can also play at with immediately, except in cases where a White move, such as , is sente against Black's top right group.

There are variations in which Black will be able to capture all of White's stones on the left side, with . If White is forced to take Black's centre group off the board - for example if there is a semeai she cannot win on its own (), and still win - Black can afford to give up the entire upper left corner. Another example of this type can be found in one of the sub-variations for of our solution ( 536); it ends with three points for Black, according to our estimation.

After the guzumi, White can avoid hazard to the group at left, by choosing any of the labelled moves - .
