Here, White played the gote move in the hanezeki at , instead of at , without playing the sente exchange of , , thereafter. White mistakenly hopes that she could use this kikashi as a ko-threat later. However, she overlooked that Black's large group now has one outside liberty () more than "usual".

:
Black connects the hanezeki's tail.

:
White's kikashi in the hanezeki comes too late now.

:
Black simply continues with occupying liberties of White's centre group.

White is able to save her group on the left side of the board, ...

... as well as her groups in the hanezeki. However, losing her centre group is too much of a burden, so Black will win the game with ease.

At all costs, White must play her sente move in the hanezeki, before Black connected the hanezeki's tail.
