Joachim's Ko-Semeai - Putting the Cart

Before the Horse (2013 - 2015)

@

FLAG 10: ( 1066)
After Black occupied a shared liberty with , his group in the upper right has eight effective liberties left (3 * c, 4 * b, k). This means that this group cannot be captured by White, using the Punishment Semeai that starts with capturing the hanezeki's tail, with a move at .

However, one of Black's liberties is the approach-move liberty at k in the ko in the upper right. Thus, this ko will become a hanami-ko for White, with Black being unable to answer any White ko-threat. Sufficient gain on the left side of the board would compensate for the loss of White's groups in the hanezeki.

Please note that - contrary to the main line of Joachim's Ko-Semeai, but similar to White's hane on the upper edge - the feasibility of this option for White depends on the availability of an appropriate ko-threat in the upper left corner.
