Joachim's Ko-Semeai - Putting the Cart

Before the Horse (2013 - 2015)

1a1 - White's Gote Move in the Hanezeki

( 976)

Here, we will first assume that White mistakenly had played the gote move of to occupy one of Black's hanezeki-directed liberties.

Black's group has eight liberties (3 * c, 4 * b, k), so it is still safe from the Punishment Semeai. The situation is similar to Black having gained an additional liberty.
With reference to this condition, White has captured the ko a bit too early. But White cannot afford to capture the ko at the moment, when her centre group has only four liberties left ( 965).

:
Black connects the hanezeki's tail, and thereafter continues occupying liberties; there is no need for him to re-capture the ko. White has no chance to connect the ko; Black would win unconditionally.

Ko: ; ; ;

:
Black threatens the atari of , so White needs atari-ko-threats.

Ko:

:
White needed four atari-ko-threats to win. However, it is very unlikely that she will get more than one in the problem.

Black will win with ease.
