Joachim's Ko-Semeai - Putting the Cart

Before the Horse (2013 - 2015)

1b1b - White Chooses the

"Fake" Punishment Semeai

( 977)

(Referenced by 995)

This is the position just before White captured the ko in the upper right for the first time. Black's large group has nine liberties (3 * c, 5 * b, k); this means that he is safe from losing this group through the Punishment Semeai here. But there is the approach-move liberty at k.

:
Quite surprisingly on first sight, White captures the hanezeki's tail.

Please note that this "fake" Punishment Semeai is not available for White in general, because White's success depends on Black's current weakness in the top left corner.

:
It follows the "usual" course of the Punishment Semeai.

:
White captures the ko, but will be unable to also take Black's large group in the upper right off the board.

:
By re-capturing the ko, Black saves his group. But this large group has only two liberties left, so Black cannot answer any White ko-threat.

, :
In the top left corner, White plays two moves in a row, which enables her to capture parts of Black's corner in sente.

:
Finally, White captures Black's nakade stones, and is safely ahead by approximately ten points.
