3 - Black's Variation with Move 55

( 979)

(Referenced by 128)

We will now analyse the effect of the variation of Black's hane with his move . (this means that , , , has been played). Here in this diagram, will shift to , will move to .

Please note a larger Black eye, which still is shown here, is not possible any more after this sequence.

In the centre, the combination of / has created the smaller eye for Black's group.

We need to take off the board, to compensate for White's additional stone in the centre.

The conditions concerning the liberties of Black's group in the upper right, and White's centre group are the same as with the original sequence of our solution. White has five liberties (2 * w, 3 * c), Black has seven liberties (3 * c, 3 * b, k).
But Black will need two external ko-threats to win the ko-fight (instead of one; due to the lost ko-threat inside Black's larger eye). The detailed move sequence is shown later ( 1064).

Another option would be to shift to , and to . However, Black's group in the upper right would have suffered from the Punishment Semeai now (White would not have captured the ko, but the hanezeki's tail with her last move), so we have to add one liberty to Black's group, as well as to White's, by removing and .

Black's group still has seven liberties (2 * c, 4 * b, k), but White's centre group has six liberties now (4 * w, 2 * c), one more than "usual". Black's position is hopeless, White will win unconditionally. This second modelling used here was not adequate.
