About Ko in a Semeai Between

Two One-Eyed Groups (2012)

Larger Eyes

If an eye contains more than two board intersections - as marked in the diagram for Black's eye - then there's a special effect that has to be taken into account. For the sake of simplicity, this effect will be demonstrated with EX = 1 here, but is valid for the other cases, too.

:
Black can utilize the capture of the two White stones as an internal ko-threat.

:
White must play into Black's eye again, so Black can capture the ko with . It is the same situation as discussed before - Black wins, if he has one ko-threat more than White does.

However, the decisive difference is that Black's ko-threat - - of capturing White's two stones cannot be erased by White beforehand.

N. B.: In this problem, neither Black, nor White, can have an eye bigger than the three-points-eye shown above. So, we will not discuss further general complications of the situation here.

Should any of the eyes have more than one visible inside liberty, these further liberties can simply be added to the number of outside liberties of the corresponding group in our formula.
