Black's diagonal move protects his crucial cutting point in the left centre in a direct manner.

White's diagonal move starts one of KataGo's astonishing attacks on Black's upper left corner.

At this moment, even with a reverse komi of -3, KataGo favours capturing the hanezeki's tail.

However, so early in the game, this move is a mistake, resulting in a drawn game with the komi mentioned above.

The runner-up move at a komi of -3 is .
In the respective subvariation, we will always manually choose the runner-up move, if KataGo wants to capture the tail.

The reverse komi had to be enlarged up to -4.5 to to dissuade KataGo from his preference, which could be a lingering relic from its area scoring days (in which the capture of further Black stones in the Nakade Area was irrelevant for the final score).
In this case, KataGo continued with the push at the left edge.

White's atari in the Guzumi Area could be played at any time, in principle.

White captures Black's single stone at the upper edge, so starting the endgame.

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • White's cumulated gain at the top is six points.
  • White's cumulated gain in the upper right corner is two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured one White stone there, so gaining one point.
  • Black's gain in the nakade area is three points.
  • Black's gain in the lower left corner is five points.

In total, Black gained two points.

White + 6 => White + 4
