Variations of Our Solution (Ib)

KataGo's 2021 Solution

VAR (.3) (.3)

: ( 58bc)
Black defends his formation in the upper left centre.

:
KataGo likes to play this wedge as a kikashi in-between.

However, it can also be considered a kind of technical mistake, as it enhances Black's eye shape in the left centre unnecessarily (and is a genuine mistake, if played too early; 58dr). In general, it should be simply left unplayed.

:
White captures the nakade.

:
White plays the crosscut in the upper left corner.

:
Black must choose the atari at the inside, as White's two stones in the lower left are not yet connected.

:
White must return to the left edge.

:
White saves her stones in the upper left.

:
KataGo likes this kind of kikashi.

:
KataGo favours defending the lower left corner with the descent to .

Black would be two points better in the Semeai Variation, if he blocked the upper left corner with , instead, in principle returning to the course of Our Solution (the wedge in the left centre does not have any effect).

:
White plays the final atari after her wedge in the left centre.

:
White starts the reduction of Black's corner territory, following a well-known path.

:
White connects, also giving atari at Black's two stones.

: (A 58be)
Black captures White's single stone in the upper right.

Giving atari at White's two stones in the lower left, instead, would lose points in the alternative Main Variation.

:
KataGo seems to like pushing into the bamboo joint as a kikashi.

However, this move can be considered a technical mistake, if played so early. White should simply do without.
Black might benefit by one point in the Semeai Variation by turning the point of into an approach-move liberty of his right-hand group. This will happen if he has sufficient Main Semeai Liberties to spend for connecting at and .

:
White captures.

:
Black must recapture.

: (A 58bg)
White continues with the Main Semeai.

Reducing Black's potential territory in the left centre with a move at , instead, would be mistaken.

:
Black gives atari at White's two stones in the lower left.

: (147 58bh)
White continues with the Main Semeai.

Connecting her two stones in the lower left, instead, would be a grave mistake.

Black must not play any reduction.

:
White might play this kikashi after her decision point.
