Variations of Our Solution (I)

VAR (.1) (.2)

( 153):
As with the "early" ko, White plays a protective move on the left side. But unfortunately, there is no single move available that erases all of Black's ko-threats in the nakade ( 841). This means that White unnecessarily loses a move here.

:
White's centre group has five effective liberties left, so White starts the ko.

Ko:

:
This is the first of two remaining Black ko-threats on the left side.

:
Black's second ko-threat on the left side. Playing at , instead, will not make a difference.

:
If Black had no further ko-threats available, White would win the semeai. Please note that there are no valid ko-threats in the nakade on the left side left.

:
However, here comes the ko-threat that wins Black the game.

Ko: ; ; ;

:
Black finally re-captures the ko, and White cannot prevent the atari at . Black wins the game.

Playing the protective move of on the left side was futile for White, and the reason for her defeat here, because it did not have any effect on the number of Black's valid ko-threats in the nakade.
