Variations of Our Solution (I)

VAR (.1) (.2)

!!! In this variation - and its sub-variations - we will assume that White intends to start the ko on the right side "late", i.e. at the moment when her centre group is reduced to five liberties. This is also shown in the theory chapter as FLAG 4a ( 1011).

We will not consider sub-variations, wherein the ko is started "in-between". !!!

White uses the same continuation - with a move in the centre - as with the main line of Joachim's Ko-Semeai ( 225).

White must not continue in the upper left, with a move at , or at , because Black's answer at , respectively at , re-takes the just won additional liberty. We will show this with sub-variations for below - we kept our "old" order of moves, so that you can better follow the development of our insights into this issue.

: (A 154)
It might be tempting, but Black must dispense with the kikashi of the cut at . Even without capturing a Black stone there, White will be forced to play at , and , anyway. Therefore, Black's cut would not have any effect here.

: (105 155; 107 156)
Trying to generate additional ko-threats, with moves either at , or at , will not really help White.

: (A 157)
White's group has six effective liberties left. It will not benefit White to also play a protective move on the left side - as with the "early" ko - aiming at erasing Black's potential ko-threats there. We will see here that Black will be able to utilise three of his nakade-ko-threats only, and there is no single move available for White that could reduce this amount at least by two.

:
Black starts the Nakade Sequence on the left side, when White's centre group has six effective liberties left.

Ko: ; ; ; ;

: (124 159)
White starts the ko on the right side "late", i.e. when her centre group has been reduced to five effective liberties.
It will not help White to first fill-in her false eyes, instead, before starting the ko-fight.

:
One "quick" ko-threat in the nakade is sufficient to win.

:
White has no valid ko-threats left. There is no way that she could pre-empt Black's winning atari at .
