White connects her single stone in the top left corner, in an attempt to generate additional ko-threats. This is also shown in the theory chapter as FLAG 4a2 ( 1016).

:
However, this move steals White's group on the upper edge the additional liberty that she had won with her earlier moves ().

Ko: ;

:
White's lost liberty enables Black to play this protective move in the top left corner, erasing all of the potential ko-threats that White wanted to create additionally.

You might try the "late" ko-semeai without this protective move on your own. Eventually you will realize that White has one ko-threat too less to win.

:
This is Black's second ko-threat on the left side.

It is shown later ( 841) that there is no single move for White available that could reduce the number of potential Black ko-threats on the left side below two. Thus, it makes no sense for White to also play a protective move on the left side, because this will only become a lost move, related to the semeai on the right.

:
Black captures the ko for the last time, and White cannot prevent the atari at , which wins Black the game.
