White could also play the kikashi of , to the left, with a move at that is answered by . Black's -stone will close the gap at .

With regard to the liberty count, nothing has changed on the right side of the board.

On the left side, Black's -stones will become a source of White's ko-threats.

Again, White would have generated one ko-threat too less.
And again, Black would be able to play a protective move in the top left corner, with (in exchange for ), to erase all of White's potential ko-threats.

The situation is the same as with White's first kikashi in the top left corner. The miai of Black's ko-threats at , and at , will win Black the game.
