Variations of Our Solution (IIIb)

Tricking KataGo (Triple-Ko)

VAR (C) (A) (.2) (.2) (.1)

(.1) (.1)

: ( 222ce)
White plays the hane at the upper edge, preparing the scene for an approach-move ko in the upper right corner.

For a long time, we thought that this move would complicate the matter unnecessarily. Until we realised that there is no need for White to fight this ko "early".

: ( C 222cg)
Black blocks, also giving atari.

At any time Black likes hereafter, he could capture the ko in the corner with . However, he would be unable to continue with capturing White's stones (by giving atari at ), just because this move would push him below the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level.

KataGo (2021i) favours the immediate push at now. The final result of the game will not become as devasting as here with the ensuing sequence below, but remain countable.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai, also erasing Black's potential ko threats at the right.

:
Black is forced to also play moves that belong to the Main Semeai.

:
White occupies one of Black's liberties in the hanezeki.

This move, and the following three, has the same effect as if Black would have played his kikashi in the hanezeki.

:
Black occupies one of the liberties of White's upper hanezeki group, so keeping the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level at seven.

If he played this move at the left, occupying one of White's liberties there, the Punishmen Semeai Liberty Level would increase by one, so the net effect is zero.

The same applies for the , exchange.

:
By this move, White has erased all of Black's potential ko threats at the right.

:
Now, the time is ripe to connect her stones in the upper right corner.

:
Black starts the ko fight.

:
After this move, Black cannot get more than a seki in the corner.

:
Black threatens to reduce White's group at the lower edge to only one eye.

:
However, Black's previous move does not really contain a valid threat, so White gives atari in the upper left corner.

She might have answered with , as she has two ko threats left at the upper edge ( and ).

:
Black puts his threat into action.
Now, it is White's group at the bottom that is connected with Black's right-hand group via the hanezeki.

:
White occupies a liberty of Black's large group at the right.

Black's large group at the right has ten liberties ().

But White's group at the bottom has twelve liberties left, two more than Black's. The position is hopeless for Black; White will win the Punishment Semeai.

White will win the game by a very large margin.
