Variations of Our Solution (IIIb)

Tricking KataGo (Triple-Ko)

VAR (C) (A) (.2) (.2) (.1)

(.1)

: ( 222bv)
Black descends to the left edge, also blocking his corner.

: (123 222cf ;  A 222dd)
White blocks at the top, pre-empting a Black move at the same point.
As we know now, we were far too cautious here, because it is not necessary for White to defend her territory at the top.

For a long time, we thought that White's hane at in the upper left corner were best, resulting in White winning the game by a large margin.
But KataGo (2021i) found a decisive improvement for Black, making the game as countable as with the best continuations for him below.

However, if White continued with the Main Semeai, instead, she would benefit by one point overall (compared to the correct continuation for Black below).

: (B 222df ;  123 222dg)
White's previous move lost one tempo in the Main Semeai, so our first thought was that Black would be able to reduce White's territory in the guzumi area.

If he played the large endgame move at , instead, he would again fall prey to White's hane in the upper left corner.

Black should have played his safety-first move in the upper left corner, frustrating White's hopes to successfully fight a ko there. Please note that White's previous block at the top erased Black's chances to fight a semeai with White's centre group.

: ( 123 222dh)
Black pushes for another time at the right edge.

However, this push is not as forcefully as the previous one, so Black should have played his safety-first move in the upper left corner, again.

: ( 123 222di)
White connects peacefully.

However, she should have punished Black for his previous mistake by starting the ko fight in the upper left corner.

: (C 222dk)
Black descends to the upper edge.

He must not allow White to start the approach-move ko in the upper left corner.

:
White plays the wedge in the left centre.

:
White plays KataGo's bad-shape move.

:
Black captures White's two stones in the lower left, ...

:
... before defending his cutting point in the left centre.

Please note that capturing White's stones in the upper left corner with is still not feasible for Black here. He would lose two tempi in the Main Semeai, which is one too many to not fall prey to the Punishment Semeai.

:
White continues with the endgame in the lower left corner.

Black must not play any reduction.

Due to the seki in the upper left corner, White will choose the Capture Variation.

After her decision point, White will descend to at the upper edge. Black will connect at .

Capture Variation:

Compared to the super²ordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is 18 points.
  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is eight points.
  • Black destroyed three points of White's territory in the upper right corner.
  • White's cumulated gain in the left centre is one point.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower left, so losing two points.

In total, White gained six points.

Jigo => White + 6
