Black gives atari at the top.

:
White ignores Black's previous move, and occupies another liberty of Black's large group at the right.

:
Winning the Main Semeai has become impossible now, so Black has to set his hopes on the Central Semeai.
His push (in sente) aims at weakening White's shape at the top.

:
White closes one of her false eyes, defending against a potential ko fight after Black's atari at .

Both groups in the Central Semeai are eyeless.
Black's large group at the right has seven outside liberties left (), but shares nine liberties () with White's centre group.
Therefore, after having connected the hanezeki's tail, Black will be unable to give atari at White's group. He has simply one decisive liberty too few.
