White pushes at the left edge.

Please note that this move will lose one point in the Capture Variation, if the upper left corner becomes a seki.
This push costs White one tempo in the Main Semeai, so Black will be able to reduce White's territory at the right by one point. There is no territory in the upper left corner; therefore, there is no point of territory that Black could have lost here.

:
Black has to intercept by descending to the left edge.

:
White forces once at the upper edge, ...

:
... before creating a ko shape, while also securing an eye in the corner.

:
Black starts the ko immediately.

:
White peeps at the upper edge.

:
Black forces once at the top, ...

:
... before connecting the ko, ignoring White's ko threat.

:
It is best for White to continue with the Main Semai.

She will not benefit by cutting at , instead.

:
Black connects at the upper edge.

:
White starts the endgame in the lower left corner "early".

:
White connects her single stone in the right centre.

She will not benefit by connecting her two stones in the lower left with , instead, because this connection loses another two tempi in the Main Semeai.

Black plays 1/1 reduction.

Please note that the upper left corner is seki.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black captured an additional two White stones in the upper left corner, so gaining two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory at the upper edge.
  • White captured an additional Black stone at the top, so gaining one point.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the upper right corner.

In total, White lost one point.

White + 11 => White + 10
