Variations of Our Solution (IIIb)

Tricking KataGo (Triple-Ko)

: ( 222gn)
White's hane into the corner initiates another ko fight, which will be quite different to that in the superordinate variation. If Black won the ko here, it would remain a seki in the upper left corner.

Again, White does not lose a Main Semeai Liberty here, as her hane creates an approach-move liberty in the corner.

: (A 222hh ; 122 222hi ; 125 222hj)
It is best for Black to immediately descend to , so closing the corner.

Capturing White's stones by giving atari at , instead, is a grave mistake.

Preempting White's hane at by occupying that point himself will lose some points unnecessarily.
Giving atari at in the corner is even worse.
Both moves will change the character of this ko fight, allowing White to push at .

:
White occupies a liberty of Black's cut-off stones.

She might consider blocking at the top with , instead, but will not really benefit from this alternative approach.

Ko: ; ; ; ;

:
White's ko threats in the lower left corner threaten the life of the entire Black group at the left.

:
Black threatens to reduce White's bottom group to only one eye.

Black could cut through at the top, starting with , instead. However, he would lose some points if he really did.

:
White answers Black's ko threat locally.

Here, in this ko fight - contrary to that in the superordinate variation - she would not benefit by ignoring Black's previous move. White would still win the game, but by about six points only.

Ko: ; ; ; ; ; ; ;

:
Black would lose one point unnecessarily, if he captured with , instead.

:
The same applies for a Black throw-in at .

Forcing moves in the hanezeki, and in the upper right, are available for Black as ko threats, because there will be no semeai with White's centre group here. Please note that Black could cut through White's forces at the top at any time he wants with a move at (but he would not benefit from this means, as already mentioned above).

:
White would lose one point unnecessarily, if she played the atari at , instead.

:
White's throw-in threatens to kill Black's group.

Ko:

:
Black gives atari at White's two stones in the upper right.

It is still worse for him to cut through at , instead.

Ko:

...

:
Black has run out of valid ko threats.

:
White gives atari at Black's cut-off stones, so ending the ko fight.

:
Black starts the endgame.

:
Black wins the final endgame ko in the upper left corner.

White wins the game by 15 points.
