Black descends to the left edge, closing his corner while occupying a liberty of White's group at the left.
However, this protective move is played too early.

:
White takes the opportunity to play the hane in the corner.

:
Black is able to play his push at the top as a kikashi.

:
Here, White will block immediately.
Black is unable to start a semeai with her centre group, as the ko fight in the upper left corner is still lurking around the corner (which White could start with playing another hane at ).

:
Black has to come back to the upper left corner, in order to immobilise White's stones there.

Black must not play any reduction.

:
White will start the endgame at the left side of the board afterher decision point, to not give Black any chances.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White got an additional two points of territory at the top.

Black lost two points.
