Black defends his territory in the left centre, also continuing with the Main Semeai.

White continues with the Main Semeai.

Preventing Black's next move at the upper edge by playing hane with , instead, would be a mistake. White would lose two points overall unnecessarily, after Black takes the point of in the upper right himself, capturing White's stone there.

In principle, Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Taking profit outside the Main Semeai area will benefit him in the Semeai Variation.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 4 => White + 4

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the lower left, but one White stone less in the left centre, so the net effect is zero.

In total, White lost four points.

Black + 1 => Black + 5
