Variations of Our Solution (IIIb)

Tricking KataGo (Triple-Ko)

VAR (C) (A)

(Referenced by 222jr)

: ( 222jp)
White plays the wedge in the left centre.

:
Black gives atari from the outside.

:
White gives counter-atari.

:
Black has to capture.

:
White plays another atari in the left centre in sente.

:
Black is forced to connect.

: (126 222ju)
White continues with the endgame in the lower left corner, in order to settle the position in that area.

Immediately playing KataGo's bad-shape move at would be a mistake, losing one point overall.

: (A 222jy)
Black simply connects.

Descending to at the upper edge, instead, would be too early here. Black would lose one point overall.

: (127 222jz)
Now the time is ripe to play KataGo's bad-shape move.

Alternatively, White could achieve the same overall result of the game by connecting her two stones in the lower left. However, Black would benefit in the Semeai Variation unnecessarily.

:
Black captures White's two stones in the lower left.

:
White continues with the Main Semeai.

: (A 222ka)
Black will defend this cutting point - sooner or later.

Now, after all other valuable endgame spots have been played out, Black might also take profit with descending to at the upper edge, instead. He will achieve the same final scores as herein.

Black must not play any reduction.

After her decision point, White will play the hane at and connect at thereafter.
Black will have to connect at before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White destroyed two points of Black's territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured one White stone there, so gaining one point.

In total, White gained one point.

White + 3 => White + 4

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White destroyed two points of Black's territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured one White stone there, so gaining one point.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the left centre, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost one point.

Jigo => Black + 1
