Black descends to the upper edge, taking profit outside the Main Semeai area.

In order to simplify the following presentation, we let White capture the nakade.

Black starts with occupying White's liberties in the left centre.

White gives atari at Black's stones above.

She might also wait with this move until after her decision point.

White secures two points of territory in the left centre.

White's previous move lost one tempo in the Main Semeai, so Black is able to further reduce White's territory at the upper edge.

Black must not play any reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White destroyed Black's territory in the left centre, so gaining one point.
  • White got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 4 => White + 4

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • White destroyed Black's territory in the left centre, so gaining one point.
  • White got an additional two points of territory in the left centre.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.
