White answers Michael Redmond's kikashi with the solid connection.

:
Black continues with the Main Semeai.

:
Once Black descended to the left edge, White is able to connect her single stone in the upper left in sente. Black is forced to defend against White's throw-in at .

; :
Black is able to connect both of his single stones in the upper right.

:
Black gives atari at White's two stones in the lower left.

:
White starts the endgame on the left side "early".

If she connected at , instead, she would lose two points overall, as Black would get the large endgame point of .

:
White has to defend her weakness in the upper right first.
Black is par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level, so she can do so in sente.

:
Black is able to defend his territory in the left centre, while occupying one of White's liberties.

Please note that White never had the chance to play the wedge in the left centre at in this subvariation.

:
Black connects.

He might consider capturing with , instead. However, this measure would not affect the overall result, but White would also win the alternative Main Variation.

:
White must connect just now.

Otherwise, Black would capture White's two stones, gaining two points overall.

:
Black uses one of the just won two tempi in the Main Semeai to take points at the upper edge.

:
In principle, Black plays 1/1 reduction.
Taking profit outside the Main Semeai area will benefit him in the Semeai Variation.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional two points of territory in the upper left corner.
  • White did not get four points of territory in the upper right and at the top.
  • White destroyed three points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.
  • White captured two Black stones less at the upper edge, so losing four points.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.

In total, White lost three points.

White + 7 => White + 4
