Please note that this move does not lose a tempo in the Main Semeai, as it creates an additional approach-move liberty for her left hand group, due to Black's cutting point in the corner.

Black connects in the corner, as he is unable to occupy White's liberty at immediately, due to White's threat of her succeeding throw-in at .

White reduces Black's territory in the upper left corner, without losing any tempo in the Main Semeai.

Here, in this subvariation, the endgame spots at and / are still open, so White will not benefit by this alternative line of play.
