Black immobilises White's single stone in the upper left corner.

White continues with the Main Semeai, starting to capture Black's two single stones at the upper edge.

White does not connect her two stones in atari with , because Black would get the large endgame point of thereafter.

White starts the endgame at the left side of the board "early".

White has to defend her weakness in the upper right first.
Black is par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level, so she can do so in sente.

Black is able to defend his territory in the left centre, while occupying one of White's liberties.

Please note that White never had the chance to play the wedge in the left centre at in this subvariation.

Black must not play any reduction.

After her decision point, White will hane at , and connect at later. Black must connect at .
Black will capture White's single stone in the upper left corner with , and White will connect at .

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black captured a White stone in the upper left corner, so gaining two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the upper left corner.
  • White destroyed three points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 7 => White + 7

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black captured a White stone in the upper left corner, so gaining two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the upper left corner.
  • White destroyed three points of Black's territory in the lower left corner.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

Black + 4 => Black + 4
