Black closes the gap in the upper left.

Black must defend against White's throw-in .

He does not have any time to live at the right.

Black is par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level, and so is unable to capture White's single stone in the right centre with , instead.

White starts the endgame at the left side of the board.

It is best for Black to connect.

He might consider sacrificing this stone. However, he will not affect the overall result of the game, but decrease his score in the Semeai Variation only.

  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the centre.

In total, Black lost two points.

White + 1 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black got an additional three points of territory at the upper edge.
  • White destroyed three points of Black's territory in the lower left corner
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black captured one White stone less in the left centre, so losing two points.
  • White got an additional point of territory in the upper right corner.
  • White captured two Black stones less at the right, so losing three points.

In total, Black gained one point.

Black + 4 => Black + 5
