Please note that this move does not lose a tempo in the Main Semeai, as it creates an approach-move liberty for White's left-hand group in the upper left.

Alternatively, playing at will have the same effect.

Defending with , instead, would be too early. Unnecessily, Black would lose two points overall.

Under no circumstances, though, must he take the opportunity to live at the right.

White's hane at the upper edge takes profit outside the Main Semeai area, and will benefit her in the Semeai Varaition.

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is one point.
  • Black got an additional three points of territory in the lower left corner.
  • Black did not capture White's stone in the upper right, so losing two points.

In total, White lost two points.

White + 3 => White + 1

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated gain in the upper left corner is one point.
  • Black got an additional three points of territory in the lower left corner.
  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory in the centre.

In total, White lost five points.

White + 1 => Black + 4
