Variations of Our Solution (IIIb)

Tricking KataGo (Triple-Ko)

VAR (C) (A) (.2)

: ( 222kz)
Black plays the guzumi in the upper right.

: (110 222mb)
White threatens to capture Black's partial group above.

She must not immediately connect her single stone with , instead.

: (109 222me)
Black blocks.

Descending to , instead, would weaken his position in the corner unnecessarily, resulting in a large loss in the Semeai Variation.

:
White gives counter-atari in the corner.

Immediately connecting at would be a grave mistake, losing two points overall.

(110 222mr):
Black must connect his stone that was in atari.

Capturing with , instead, would end in a disaster for him.

:
White connects her single stone.
Please note that this connection creates an approach-move liberty for White's group at the left, and so does not lose a tempo in the Main Semeai.

:
Black must immobilise White's cutting stone in the corner.

Otherwise, he could not withstand White's atari that threatens to connect along the edge.

:
White's push at the upper left edge is essential.
It destroys two points of Black's potential territory, but does not lose any tempo in the Main Semeai.

:
Black is forced to defend against White's throw-in at .

Until now, he never got the opportunity to live at the right with a move at .

:
Eventually, White replys to Black's guzumi locally.

:
Black gives atari at White's two stones in the lower left.

:
White has to start the endgame in the lower left.

If she connected at , instead, Black would take the large endgame point of , and gain overall.

:
The point of in the upper right is still open, so it is best for Black to connect.

It would be worse for him overall to capture at , instead, or to play at immediately.

: ( A 222mt)
White connects her two stones in the lower left, but this is thought too simple.

It would have been better for her to keep Black par with the Punishment Semeai Liberty Level by connecting her single stone in the right centre, instead.

:
White lost two tempi in the Main Semeai by her last move, so Black is able to capture White's single stone in the upper right, which costs him one Main Semeai Liberty only (in fact, this move loses two tempi, but the point of becomes an additional approach-move liberty for his large group).

:
White takes profit outside the Main Semeai area, which will benefit her in the Semeai Variation.

Black plays 2/2 reductions.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • White's cumulated gain in the upper left corner ist six points.
  • White did not get five points of territory in the upper right corner.
  • White destroyed one point of Black's territory in the left centre.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.
  • White captured an additional two Black stones at the right, so gaining four points.
  • Black captured White's single stone in the upper right, so gaining two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 3 => White + 3
