Black occupies a shared liberty on the upper edge, hoping for an additional ko-shape in that area, which hopefully might benefit him.

However, his eye-shape in the right centre is not yet fixed, so his hopes for the combination of a larger eye, and an additional ko-shape, will be in vain.

It will not make a difference to insert the kikashi of just now. Black might get a larger eye in the centre, but there will be no additional ko-shape on the upper edge.

Here, White must choose the gote-sente combination of , and , to turn Black's ko-threat in the hanezeki, at , into a suicidal one.
