The cut at is a tesuji, if White does not want to connect her single stone on the fourth line, with a move at . It threatens a large ko in the corner that will be demonstrated in some sub-variations.

Black cannot connect at , or defend the cutting point with a move at , because White gets a ko that Black will be unable to win.

We present these ko variations in detail to make clear that - in our opinion - Black cannot hope to win any ko in the upper left corner.

Black will lose another few points, should he decide to play on the upper edge, at , instead.

Black wins by three points.
