White is unable to capture Black's top right group in the Semeai Variation, shown before. So, in principle, it is preferable for her to capture Black's centre string already early, with a move at , saving her bottom group.

In this case, it might be the technically correct move to precede this capture with the sagari of . White obtains six points of territory in the resulting eye (, , ). The exchange of , does not affect the liberty count. As in the main line of this variation, Black still needs 15 moves to take White's bottom group off the board (he must connect at , and occupy eleven outside, and three inside, White liberties here).
