Black connects at the lower edge, answering White's forcing move in the corner.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation, ...

  • Black destroyed an additional poínt of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White gained an additional two points of territory in that area.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, gains and losses compensate for each other.

White + 2 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation...

  • Black destroyed an additional poínt of White's territory at the upper edge.
  • Black did not get any territory in the left centre, so losing one point.
  • White gained an additional two points of territory in that area.
  • White captured an additional Black stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, Black lost four points.
