Black is forced to answer from below, just because he does not have a sure eye in the centre yet (Dany's atekomi at is still lurking around).

Black plays KataGo's solid connection in the left centre, securing an eye above.

If he connected at , instead, he would be unable to win the Semeai Variation.

White must throw-in at the lower edge.

Connecting her single stone in the upper edge with , instead, would be a grave mistake, resulting in a drawn game only.

White blocks at the top.

Black is able to connect.

White continues with the Main Semeai.

Black has to capture White's two stones – sooner or later. Otherwise, he would be unable to approach White's left-hand group in the lower left corner.

Black must not play any reduction.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left corner is two points.
  • White captured Black's stone in the lower right, so gaining two points.

In total, White gained one point.

White + 1 => White + 2

Semeai Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation...

  • Black's cumulated gain at the upper edge is two points.
  • Black got an additional point of territory in the left centre.
  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left corner is two points.
  • White captured one Black stone less in the lower right, so losing two points.
  • Black captured an additional White stone in the lower left corner, so gaining two points.

In total, White lost five points.

White + 1 => Black + 4
