Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.1)

: ( 648ae)
Black destroys another point of White's territory in the upper right, effective in the Capture Variation.

:
With this move, Black has destroyed three points of White's territory at the right - effective in the Capture Variation.

Black has played 3/5 reductions.

///:

:
At the moment of White's decision point, Black's large group in the upper right has nine liberties - eight direct liberties (), and one approach-move liberty ().

Black's liberty at lA does not count here, because it will vanish with White's sente move in the hanezeki.

Please also note White's cutting points in the right centre, which will become important soon.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black destroyed one point of White's territory at the upper edge, so gaining one point.

White lost one point.

White + 2 => White + 1

///:

Semeai Variation:

:
White occupies Black's seventh liberty.

Black's large group had nine liberties at the start of the Semeai Variation, so there are two liberties remaining () at the moment.

Please note that Black is ready to capture White's group in the lower left corner that has only one liberty left, and to give atari in the hanezeki thereafter.

Had White connected at earlier in the game, forcing Black to capture her single stone wC in the upper right, Black would have kept his liberty in this area (then inside his eye). White, however, would just have created an additional approach-move liberty at lB for Black's group in the upper right, making it impossible for her to capture it.
If White connected at , instead, she would also avoid the ko, but this move would be too slow again, similar to before.

:
At the latest possible moment, Black captures in the upper right centre.

:
White gives atari at Black's group.

:
But Black can capture at now.

:
White's group in the centre is in atari, so she has to connect at .

:
Now, Black captures White's group in the lower right corner.

:
White recaptures the ko in the centre, again giving atari at Black's large group.

:
Black has a ko threat available at the upper edge.

:
White captures Black's group at the right.

If she answered Black's ko threat by capturing with , instead, Black would recapture the ko with , and save his group by giving atari with thereafter. White does not have any ko threat to stop this.

Black wins the game by over 15 points.
