Variations of Our Solution (IIIa)

No Early Kikashi

VAR (.1) (.5)

: ( 648ap)
White plays Dany's atekomi, intending to fight Dany's Ko thereafter.

We now know that White's move loses a tempo in the Main Semeai.
It does not create an approach-move liberty for her left-hand group at lA, because Black's marked stones still have another liberty at lB.

:
Black gives atari at White's two stones in the lower left.

We now know that this atari is not necessary.
White lost a tempo in the Main Semeai by her previous move, so Black could give atari at sA immediately, initiating Dany's Ko.

We ask for your kind understanding that we did not delete this exchange that loses a ko threat for Black unnecessarily. White is comfortably ahead in ko threats, so Black would have no chance at all to win Dany's Ko anyway, even with one more ko threat.

:
White connects.

Please remember that White wanted to fight Dany's Ko in this subvariation, and so did not choose the alternative option of Dany's Sacrifice, which would be better for her here.

:
Now, Black gives atari in the left centre, initiating Dany's Ko.

Ko:

:
White plays her ko threat in the upper left centre.

:
Black's connection simplifies the presentation.

Please note that has become an approach-move liberty of White's left hand group.

:
Black's push at the top is no absolute sente.

:
White is able to insert her own kikashi in the lower left corner, threatening to kill Black's entire group.

:
Sooner or later, Black will have to connect his two stones.

:
White connects her single stone at the upper edge.

:
Black simplifies the issue by occupying one of White's approach-move liberties. He knows that he will be unable to win the ko fight in the left centre.

White is comfortably ahead in ko threats (8 x vs. 5 x ).

:
White has to connect the ko.

Black plays 2/4 reductions.

Later, White will play her kikashi , in the lower left corner, so that Black has to capture with before the end of the game.

Capture Variation:

Compared to the superordinate variation ...

  • Black's cumulated loss in the lower left corner is two points.
  • Black did not capture White's two stones in the lower left, so losing four points.
  • White did not capture Black's stone in the lower right, so losing two points.

In total, White gained four points.

Black + 1 => White + 3

Semeai Variation:

At White's decision point, Black's large group in the upper right will have nine liberties, eight direct ones (), and one approach-move liberty ().
White on her side will suffer from the final ko in the upper right centre - found by Joachim ( 648ag) - that depends on the existence of two White cutting points in the centre (), and Black's large ko threat at at the top.
Black's large group in the upper right will not survive the semeai, but Black will capture White's wC-stones in the upper left, and win by about 15 points.

Black will win the game by a large margin.
